Advances in Packaging Technology

Duane B. Priddy | Duane B. Priddy - Feb 1, 2010

Packaging continues to be the single largest use of plastics. Recently there have been significant advances in the development of new packaging technology. The advances include biodegradability/compostability, recyclability, antimicrobial, time release of antioxidants or medicine, electroconductive, thermochromic, nanocomposite, and smart packaging. Because of “green movement” pressure on plastics, much of the research has focused on the development of new packaging materials from renewable resources. This month’s R&D highlights will focus on advances in packaging, especially related to the environment.
