Converters of chemical films and bags requiring ESD lose money over time because they use ESD-solutions containing migratory or carbon black systems to facilitate the antistatic effect. Migratory systems suffer from bleed off and carbon black causes sloughing. This leads to cross contamination of the filled good and creates considerable amounts of off-spec material.
Furthermore: the antistatic effect as well as the permanency of the effect is heavily dependent on environmental humidity when migratory systems are being used; although very inexpensive, the reliability of those systems is quite questionable and could be dangerous for all activities where ESD-protection is mandatory, like in ex-zones.
Carbon black as alternative material provides desired permanency but due to its conductivity is hard discharging. The risk for explosion through spark formation of a sudden hard discharge is dramatically increased, when grounding can’t be fully guaranteed, such as during inter-plant transportation or through human errors (e.g., forgetting to ground the device).
