Benefit from Ticona´s Advanced Gear System Expertise
Replacing metal with plastic to produce gears has had a positive impact on gear manufacturing and in-use behavior:
Cost reduction: plastic gears are ready for assembly and do not require any finishing step
Greater design flexibility: the use of plastic for gear systems has improved part consolidation and allowed complex geometries design
Noise reduction: light weight gears enables inertia lowering and thus keeps the transmission quieter. Plastic´s lower modulus also affects sound transmission
Inherent lubricity: unlike metal, plastic gears do not need external lubricant in many applications. And for applications that cannot endure external lubricants, internal lubrication (e.g. with PTFE) is possible
Chemical and corrosion resistance: this criteria is critical to assess the suitability to operating conditions and is very difficult to obtain with metal gears
Dimensional and property behavior of the material with respect to the temperature range and the chemical exposure (including moisture) are also critical.
Furthermore, gears will have to interact with other components (such as housings, shafts and bearings) which implies that friction and wear need to be considered when selecting the right material.
As the world leader in plastic gear technology, Ticona has developed innovative and high-quality gearing solutions and services from its 30+ -years in gear expertise.
Ticona´s solutions portfolio includes grades made of acetal copolymer (POM) or polybutylene terephtalate (PBT) with characteristics that perfectly suit demanding gear systems.
