Improved Antimicrobial Effect for Small Appliances Housings
In small appliances, applications such as personal care (massagers, shavers, etc.), kitchen or
sanitary appliances and products (hand dryers, de-/humidifier, etc.), hygiene is becoming more and more important to avoid bacterial infection transferable from contact via handles, grips or switches.

Already tested and approved for medical applications, new grades of antimicrobial Makrolon® polycarbonate (PC) and Bayblend® PC/ABS blends have been developed.
Silver-based antimicrobial additives have been incorporated into Bayer MaterialScience engineering thermoplastics thus preventing bacteria growth and reducing the risks of infection as illustrated on the figures below:
Antibacterial effectiveness test results:
Figure below illustrates the efficacy obtained with Makrolon® Antimicrobial additives in comparison with the best working benchmark of the market.
For this test, the film contact method; JIS Z 2801:2000 was performed with Staphylcoccus Aureus and Klebsiella Pneumoniae.
Efficacy of Makrolon® Antimicrobial Polycarbonate:
Stain testing conducted by Bayer MaterialScience shows that bacteria on untreated polycarbonate grows unabated, while bacteria on the antimicrobial Makrolon® polycarbonate is virtually nonexistent.
