Water Absorption 24 hours of Plastics

Some polymers have a natural tendency to absorb water. This leads to changes in dimensions as well as in mechanical and electrical performance. This represents the % weight gain of a plastic specimen due to water absorption after immersion in distilled water during 24 hours at 23°C. Two other testing procedures are possible: Water Absorption at saturation (measurement occurs when the polymer does not absorb water anymore); and Water Absorption at Equilibrium (specimens are exposed to a humid environment -- generally at 50% relative humidity -- at a specified temperature -- 23°C or 73.4°F -- for 24 hours).

Most widely used standards to measure Water Absorption in plastics are ASTM D570 and ISO 62.
